Description
1807 JR-1 Dime, MS65
Unabraded and Attractively Toned
1807 10C JR-1, R.1, MS65 PCGS. CAC. Though the Guide
Book reports an 1807 mintage of 165,000 pieces, only a single
die variety is known. Production of dimes was limited to the 1807
between 1806 and 1808 since silver bullion depositors at the Mint
preferred the convenience of larger denominations. The mintage of
1807 half dollars surpassed 1,000,000 pieces. It is likely that
1807 dimes were infrequently seen relative to worn-out or cut-down
Spanish colonial silver, which remained legal tender until
1857.Many better grade 1807 examples display bold clash marks on the right reverse field, but clashes on the present coin are less extensive. There is a double "beard" clash beneath Liberty's jaw and a "lump" clash above the upper cleavage. A faint clash from the horizontal shield lines rests beneath Liberty's ear, and minor clashes are evident on the reverse near the shield tips and banner.
Most collectors will pay greater attention to the splendidly mark-free surfaces, which are richly patinated in intermingled tobacco-brown and gunmetal-blue shades. The reverse border exhibits blushes of forest-green. The major devices are well struck, though UNITED and the left-side obverse stars show weakness. Coruscating luster further confirms the remarkable quality. PCGS Population: 9 in 65 (1 in 65+), 4 finer (3/26).
