    Description

    1807 JR-1 Dime, AU58
    Attractive Early Dime Type Coin
Last Year of the Heraldic Eagle Reverse

1807 10C JR-1, R.2, AU58 PCGS. CAC. The partial mint luster remaining throughout this nearly Uncirculated 1807 illuminates largely violet-gray surfaces that show splashes of fiery golden-orange color. The combination generates spectacular eye appeal on each side. Although the margins display softness on the stars and lower reverse legends, the centers are decidedly sharp, especially on the eagle's shield and breast feathers.

Variety: JR-1, R.2. This is the only known die pair for the issue. The reverse was previously used to strike quarter eagles in 1805, 1806, and 1807. It is seen here in its final state with die cracks, clash marks, and areas of shallow design definition from die lapping.

Population Data (9/15): For the year 1807, PCGS shows 30 in this grade of all varieties and several dozen finer.

Heritage Commentary: The 1807 is the final year of issue of the Heraldic Eagle type, and it is also the highest-mintage date among early dimes (165,000 coins struck). These factors make it an ever-popular choice among type enthusiasts.

    Provenance: Stack's (10/1996), lot 155. (NGC ID# 236T, Variety PCGS# 38770, Base PCGS# 4480)

    Weight: 2.70 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
