    Description

    1807 Dime, JR-1, MS64
Late Die State, Brilliant and Frosty

1807 10C JR-1, R.2, MS64 PCGS. The dies were pushed to their limits during the last year of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle design, when a single die pair squeezed out the mintage of 165,000 pieces. No dimes were struck the following year, and 1809 brought the debut of the Capped Bust design. JR-1 was the sole 1807 die marriage, shown here in a worn state of the dies with heavy die clashing on the obverse, with severe bulges from die fatigue.

This brilliant and frosty piece provides a clear view of the worn state of the dies. The left-side stars are weak, while UNITED fades into the edge. The left-side milling is partially gone on both sides of the coin. In contrast, many of the central elements are sharply struck. Although the 1807 dime regularly appears in well-circulated grades, near-Gem coins are scarce and Gems are great rarities. The date sees strong demand from early type set specialists and date collectors alike. (NGC ID# 236T, Variety PCGS# 38770, Base PCGS# 4480)
