Gem 1807 JR-1 Dime
    Ideal Type Coin

1807 10C MS65 PCGS. JR-1, R.2. Among Draped Bust dimes, the year 1807 has the highest mintage by far, at 165,000 pieces. Whether all of those coins actually were dated 1807 is doubtful, seeing as all known dimes dated 1807 come from a single pair of dies, yet the numerous die states known for the 1807 JR-1 dime suggest that the pair did in fact see heavy use consistent with the striking of tens of thousands of examples; further, the R.2 rarity of the die pair indicates survival in the hundreds.
Of course, few dimes have made it through two centuries and more in such excellent shape as this Gem. Due to the elite preservation, this coin shows its die states more plainly than the vast majority of survivors. The margins are weakly struck, especially at the left obverse where several stars are all but wiped out and the corresponding soft lettering at the left reverse, yet the broad swirl of luster leaves no doubt as to this coin's Mint State status. On the obverse, the date exergue and right field show prominent clash marks from the eagle motif on the reverse die.
In contrast to the peripheral softness, the interiors have relatively good definition, particularly on Liberty's curls and the eagle's feathers. With a hint of greenish-gold color accenting the frosty silver surfaces, this coin has amazing all-around eye appeal. It could find a home in either an elite type set or as a finisher to a great series collection of Draped Bust dimes. The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
