    Description

    1807 Dime, MS66, JR-1
    Extraordinary Preservation and Appeal

1807 10C MS66 NGC. JR-1, R.2. The reported mintage of dimes in 1807 was 165,000 pieces, by far the largest of the Draped Bust type running from 1796 to 1807. The 1807 is the last series issue, as no dimes were made in 1808 and the Capped Bust design of John Reich would debut in 1809. The reverse dies of the early dimes and quarter eagles were interchangeable, and the reverse of the 1807 dime had been previously used to strike quarter eagles dated 1805, 1806/4, 1806/5, and 1807. The reverse is noticeably weak, as a rule, at the peripheries.

On the other hand: This Premium Gem dime shows virtually no sign of contact and is well-struck through the centers. Generous mint luster remains over surfaces that offer a beautiful mix of pinkish-gold and blue hues. The letter tops on the reverse are a tad weak, yet not overly so, and the obverse also shows some strike softness most noticeable on the left-side stars and the dentilation from 4 o'clock to 12:30. The extreme rim is a bit irregular, with portions of a wire rim showing, other areas flat, and some lumpy areas also at the rim. The excellent preservation marks this piece as among the few finest survivors. Census: 2 in 66, 1 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 236T, PCGS# 4480)

    Weight: 2.70 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
