    Description

    Originally Toned 1796 Dime, XF40, JR-6

1796 10C XF40 PCGS. JR-6, R.3. This is the so-called "hyphenated date" because of the die crack that runs through the date. Approximately 30% of extant 1796 dimes are believed to be from variety, with most coins clustered around the VF grade level. As we have said in the past, but it bears repeating again, the JR reference gives an unreliable diagnostic for attributing this variety: there actually is a very small outer berry between D and S1. This is an intermediate die state with about half of the die cracks listed in the JR reference seen on the reverse. Showing a bit of wear over the highpoints, the surfaces are originally toned in medium to darker gray shades. There are several diagonal grease stains on the upper right of the obverse and a darker spot of color in the middle of the eagle's breast and along the upper portion of the eagle's wing.

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
