    1807 Draped Bust Dime, AU50
JR-1, Only Dies for the Date

1807 10C JR-1, R.2, AU50 NGC. According to Mint records, a substantial mintage of 165,000 Draped Bust dimes was accomplished in 1807, with a single die variety known for the date. Mint officials knew the design would soon be changed over to the Capped Bust motif by John Reich and they tried to make this last pair of Draped Bust dies last as long as possible. The reverse die was actually used previously to strike quarter eagles in 1805 through 1807. As a result of the extended die use, all examples seen have weak obverse stars on the left and the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM is missing. This coin shows weak dentilation in many areas, but the central design elements were strongly impressed and most interior detail remains intact. Dramatic clash marks show in front of the bust. The lightly abraded surfaces display traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas. (NGC ID# 236T, Variety PCGS# 38770, Base PCGS# 4480)
