1795 Draped Bust Dollar, Unc Details
B-14, BB-51, Uncentered Bust

1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off-Center, B-14, BB-51, R.2 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Bowers Die State I. The early Mint's master dies for the Robert Scot's Draped Bust design had the portrait punched too far left to be properly centered within the die work. The subsequent variety (BB-52) corrected the portrait placement in a more centered location, but not before an unspecified quantity of the off-center dollars were struck. This is sharply defined example of the 1795 Off-Center Draped Bust dollar that has been cleaned. The Small Eagle reverse is remarkably sharp including nearly full breast feathers and only minor weakness at the forward leg plumage. A few light field abrasions and three small marks on Liberty's cheek and neck serve as pedigree markers for this example since it ranks highly among all BB-51 dollars in terms of sharpness. Considerable eye appeal and technical merit survive despite the noted cleaning.
