Description

1795 B-14, BB-51 Silver Dollar, MS62
Uncentered Draped Bust

1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off Center MS62 NGC. B-14, BB-51, R.2. The Bowers-Borckardt reference states that all examples of this variety were struck from perfect dies. However, this piece shows light clash marks on both sides. At the time that reference was prepared, now almost two decades ago, die state study was still in its infancy. Providing collectors with a starting point in the early 1990s, much additional data has become available through a substantially larger collector base and the careful eye of present day students.
The 1795 B-14, BB-51 silver dollar is believed the first Draped Bust silver dollar minted. At the very least, strong evidence suggests that the dies for the B-14 dollar were made first. However, the alternative view point suggests that these coins were struck after the B-15, BB-52 dollars, since this reverse die was used for six varieties through 1798.
This lovely example has a bold strike, especially at the centers. The stars at the upper right are flat, but that is a characteristic of the variety rather than an indication of the strike. This piece has fully brilliant light gray surfaces with no evidence of toning on either side. The fields are fully prooflike, a quality that is evident on several survivors from this die pair. The obverse of this specimen has prominent vertical adjustment marks that were present before the coin left the mint in 1795. The reverse has no adjustment marks and few post-mint blemishes of any sort. Although below the condition census for the variety, this amazing example will be a centerpiece to an advanced type set or specialized collection.
