    1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, AU55
    Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27, R.1, AU55 NGC. Ex: Durango Collection. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III. A relatively large mintage of 160,295 Flowing Hair dollars was accomplished in 1795, with 19 die varieties known for the date. It is possible that some 1795-dated coins were struck in later years, as the number of extant specimens is greater than the reported mintage would suggest.

The present coin is an attractive Choice AU specimen of the BB-27 variety, with the "bar" in the obverse field, near the highest curl. The BB-27 is the most available variety of the Flowing Hair type. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was also used to strike the BB-25 and BB-26 varieties of the date. The lightly abraded surfaces show vivid shades of cerulean-blue, golden-brown, and lavender-gray toning, with original mint luster underneath. The design elements show only light wear, but the high relief of the bust caused that feature to be softly impressed. A few light planchet adjustment marks appear in the lower obverse dentils.
