Description

    1795 B-1, BB-21 Flowing Hair Dollar, AU53
Brilliant With Traces of Mint Luster

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves AU53 PCGS. B-1, BB-21. R.2. One has to wonder how much circulation this bright-silver, early dollar actually experienced. With slight rub on the high points, it is clearly a circulated coin but it still offers excellent detail and appeal. Hair details display good delineation of the curls with light wear on the high points above Liberty's forehead and on the point of the bust truncation. The fields are amazingly free of abrasions. The reverse surfaces are equally clean, and the eagle's breast is nearly rounded, lacking feather detail only where high-point friction is evident. The wings display good feather detail and, perhaps most satisfying, the eagle's talons gripping the rock are more prominent than on many early dollars, a characteristic of the B-1 variety.

Two Mint-made issues are obvious. Several light adjustment marks angle across the obverse, most obvious on the portrait. A planchet defect -- another Mint-related flaw -- appears beneath the 5 in the date. These are natural results of the minting process but often shunned by collectors. Still, this is an intriguing early dollar with many positive attributes and overall condition approaching Choice AU. Population: 13 in 53, 40 finer (11/13).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 24WZ, PCGS# 6853)
