NGC. Bowers Die State I. When punching the devices into the
die, the engraver set about entering the stars, letters, and
numerals, one at a time, working backward as the die is a mirror
image of the struck coin. For the date numerals, he probably
punched the 5 and 9 first, then mistakenly reached for a digit 1
punch before entering the next digit. He likely then uttered an
18th century unmentionable before continuing his work, punching a 7
over the errant 1. This pleasing piece has smooth surfaces with
rich steel-blue and pale gold toning. There are no distracting
abrasions or adjustment marks, with bold definition for the
assigned grade. NGC Census (for the BB-21 variety): 7 in 12, 85
finer (5/25).Ex: The Mile High Collection / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2017), lot 4512.
