    Description

    1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, XF45
    B-13, BB-24, Scarce Two-Leaves Die Pair

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves, B-13, BB-24, R.5, XF45 NGC. This BB-24 die pair is the same as Bolender's B-13 variety, of which he had seen just three examples as of 1950 "and no others have been heard of in 40 years." Haseltine listed the same die pair as number 13 in his Type Chart, and thought it was "probably unique, as I have never seen or heard of another of this variety." Many have surfaced since then, however, most of them in lower circulated grades. The latest Bowers Encyclopedia suggests between 100 and 150 known in all grades.

The variety remains far scarcer than the usually encountered Flowing Hair dollars. In grades above VF, the variety is rare -- as emphasized by the Bowers List of Notable Specimens, where just two are listed in Mint State, and the present example most likely ranks within the top 10 known (possibly as high as eighth, in a tie with one or two others). Smooth, silver-gray surfaces display remaining mint luster around the stars and the reverse devices. A few tiny abrasions do not distract from the pleasing quality of this well-made, appealing Flowing Hair dollar.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 24WZ, PCGS# 6853)
