Description

1796 Draped Bust Dollar, AU55
B-5, BB-65, Large Date, Small Letters

1796 $1 Large Date, Small Letters, B-5, BB-65, R.2, AU55 PCGS. Bowers Die State VI. The latest state of the dies as described by the Bowers reference, although the die rust at ER of AMERICA extends to AM and beyond AMER to the leaves below. The die lump between I and C of AMERICA erupts below the dentils and obscures the upper gap between those letters, and extends over the upright of I to the left and to the inner curve of C on the right. We note obverse adjustment marks that are heaviest across stars 1 to 4, most of which do not extend much further into the field or interrupt the sharply defined hair strands of Liberty.

A dappling of pale-gold toning covers both sides, with splashes of lilac and lavender on the lower reverse border. Just slight wear on the eagle's breast and leg and tiny marks account for the Choice About Uncirculated grade. Much silver luster remains on both sides of this sharply defined Draped Bust dollar. We note a pattern of light marks between UNITED and STATES that do not interfere with the legend.
