Description

    1796 B-4, BB-61 Dollar, AU55
    Small Date, Large Letters

1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters AU55 NGC. B-4, BB-61, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, equivalent to B-4a. Bolender called the late die state extremely rare and reported that he had only seen one example. Since that time, and with much greater interest in the early dollars, a number of late die states have been seen, probably 20% of all examples from this die pair. A small die chip near the bust is centered over the 1 in the date, and that is a diagnostic feature of the obverse. The Large Letters reverse completes the attribution, while Small Letters reverse coins from this obverse die are extremely rare, if they exist at all. Most examples described as such in past auction catalogs were unplated, making verification impossible.
The present specimen is a pleasing Choice AU with attractive gray patina and lovely rose-gold toning over smooth and partly lustrous surfaces. Minor adjustment marks at the center of the obverse cause slight weakness on both sides. This piece will garner the attention of variety specialists as few finer examples are known.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 24X3, PCGS# 6860)
