Description

Wonderful 1797 10x6 Stars Dollar
B-3, BB-71, AU58

1797 $1 10x6 Stars, Large Letters AU58 PCGS. B-3, BB-71, R.2. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, with both obverse and reverse lapped, as usually seen. The lone 1797 obverse die with the stars arranged 10 and 6 instead of 9 and 7, paired with a Large Letters reverse die. In his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, Bowers notes that a number of auctions prior to the early 1990s called examples of the BB-71 "Uncirculated," though today PCGS recognizes just four Mint State survivors (4/09). It does not seem unreasonable that this near-Mint piece, immensely lustrous with only light rub on the reverse high points, might have been called Uncirculated in the past. Peach, gold, and dusky silver-blue shadings embrace each side.(Registry values: P4)
