10x6 Stars Guide Book Variety
1797 $1 10x6 Stars, Large Letters, B-3, BB-71, R.2, AU53 PCGS.
CAC. Bowers Die State III. Distinctively original toning graces
this About Uncirculated Draped Bust early dollar. The 10x6 star
arrangement immediately identifies the B-3, BB-71 variety, a
monogamous die pairing since the obverse and the reverse are in
their only use as dies for this variety. Golden brown color ebbs
and flows across the well-preserved, minimally marked fields and
devices, interrupted by silver-gray toning at the highest points
exposed to circulation wear. Subtle silver luster remains beneath
the undisturbed patina. Both 1797 Large Letters varieties combine
to make up the lion's share of 1797 examples. Although the BB-73
die pair features better visual balance with its 9x7 Stars layout,
the 10x6 Stars variant is always a collector favorite. The official
7,776-piece mintage is thought to be obviously too low given the
number 1797 silver dollars extant, this date remains supremely
challenging at the About Uncirculated level, particularly with CAC
endorsement. PCGS Population: 15 in 53, 27 finer. CAC: 1 in 53, 1
