PCGS. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. Bowers-Borckardt Die State
I. Well-centered design elements and full, broad borders dominate a
design with suitable remaining definition, save for the center of
the reverse. Minimally marked for the grade with pleasing
steel-gray patina. This reverse die is noteworthy for being mated
with four different obverse dies, one each dated 1795, 1796, 1797,
and 1798. While the rarity of this variety has been overstated in
the past, it is still one of the scarcer 1797 die marriages of
which perhaps 200-300 examples survive.Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2005), lot 6594.
