Description

1797 Draped Bust Dollar, VF35
9x7 Stars, Small Letters
Very Scarce B-2, BB-72

1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Small Letters, B-2, BB-72, R.4, VF35 PCGS. Bowers Die State I. Obverse lapped with no die cracks, while the workhorse reverse die is on it's fifth usage and has been relapped. The very scarce 1797 9x7 Stars, Small Letters dollar is the most sought after of the 1797 varieties, and was first described by John Haseltine in 1881. The most recent estimate of surviving examples is 90 to 160 coins in all grades by Harry Salyards in his excellent reference book Eagle Poised on a Bank of Clouds: The United States Silver Dollars of 1795-1798. On the obverse, there is a tiny raised lump in the field between the portrait and star 9, which is actually an errant star point. The reverse has seven berries on the olive branch, one of them being directly under the A in STATES.

The coin is richly toned in deep gray hues, with lighter gray on the high points of the design. Lightly abraded in the obverse fields, while the reverse has just small and scattered marks. The strike is typical of the variety, with some central softness, but the coin has full and sharp dentilation. The presentation is quite attractive and this specimen would make a very nice representative of this popular Draped Bust, Small Eagle dollar variety.
