Description

1798 Large Eagle Dollar, XF45
B-11, BB-111, Pointed 9
Late Die State

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, B-11, BB-111, R.3, XF45 PCGS. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die State VII. This late die state features one of the most spectacular obverse die cracks of the early dollar series. Earlier die states show a developing mound beneath Liberty's chin that forms a crack through the lower points of star 13. Another crack develops from the upper-right point of star 13 and curves through the mouth, cheek, and hair to the back of the head. Biplanar surface weakens the central strike, although all else is sharp on this XF45 example. The present coin is plated in the Bowers Encyclopedia to illustrate the late die state. A ring of cobalt-blue toning encircles the Choice central motifs for dramatic eye appeal.
