Description

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, B-24, BB-124, R.2 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. VF. Bowers Die State III. A trio of file marks to the right of the date help differentiate the BB-124 variety from BB-122, which has a similar (but not identical) obverse. The BB-124 obverse is unique to the variety, here paired with the "Blundered Stars" reverse that appears on two 1798 varieties and a 1799 dollar as well. Some of the field stars overlap the clouds on the reverse, an engraver's error. This example displays somewhat foggy-gray toning from a past cleaning with the resultant swirling hairlines. Weakness at the clouds and the right half of the field stars is typical of the intermediate state of the reverse die, which was relapped.
