Description

1798 Large Eagle Dollar, B-8, BB-125, XF40
Four Berries Reverse

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Four Berries, B-8, BB-125, R.2, XF40 PCGS. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die State II. An unusual, freestanding vertical die crack in the left obverse field confirms the middle state of the dies, a monogamous pair used only for BB-125. Splashes of gunmetal-blue, sea-green, and grayish-brown toning visit the obverse, while the reverse is lightly toned in pale-gold shades. Glimpses of mint luster remain primarily on the reverse. BB-125 is best-known for its Four Berries reverse, the only four-berry reverse for 1798. This early dollar is sharply defined for the XF grade, with light abrasions but no overly heavy marks.
