Description

1798 Large Eagle Dollar, VF35
Rare B-16, BB-110 Variety
Wide Date, Pointed 9

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Wide Date, B-16, BB-110, R.6, VF35 NGC. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die state I with only faint cracks near the flag of the 1 in the date. A majority of BB-110 dollars have a heavy linear die crack through the top of the date and west to the rim; which apparently quickly evolved into a cud and forced discard of the obverse die. W. David Perkins wrote a front page article in the May 22, 2006 edition of Coin World stating that Wayne Miller became the first numismatist to complete a die variety collection of early dollars. Perkins and Andy Lustig purchased the collection in 2015 and offered it at fixed prices, stating "it was assembled over 32 years and included all 118 different die marriages known at the time." This problem-free example is cream-gray aside from a spot on the obverse rim at 3 o'clock. Marks are minimal, and the eye appeal is pleasing. The strike is good save for the reverse area opposite the bust tip.
