Description

1798 Large Eagle Dollar, XF45
Rare B-19, BB-106 Variety

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Wide Date, B-19, BB-106, R.5, XF45 NGC. Bowers Die State II. A faint vertical die crack through the hair has not yet reached the E in LIBERTY. This rare variety has a wide date and diagnostic die flaws at the upper reverse. Bowers (2013) notes that BB-106 "is one of the rarer varieties of the year. An estimated 80 to 140 exist ... ." This XF dollar probably ranks at the low end of the Condition Census for the variety, along with the Cohen and National Bank of Denver examples. Olive accents complement steel-gray patina. The design elements, though lightly worn from circulation, retain much detail. A small pedigree mark occurs on the bust.
