Description
Important 1798 Knob 9 Dollar, NGC Graded Mint State 63, The Eliasberg Specimen
1798 $1 Large Eagle MS63 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. B-6, BB-96. R.3. Die State IV. The 1798 "Knob 9" Dollar is exceedingly difficult to locate in Mint State grades. Here is an opportunity to acquire an MS63 NGC example of this variety, the highest grade given to a "Knob 9" Dollar per the NGC Census Report as of July 2001. This lustrous specimen has a nice medium gray and gold tone with some blue intermixed at the rims. Some adjustment marks are present on the obverse. The reverse is struck slightly off-center, as frequently seen for some unknown reason on this die marriage. The obverse on this die marriage was first used to strike the rare 1798 B-7, BB-95 variety. After striking 1798 B-6, BB-96, the reverse die was once again used, this time to produce the rare 1798 B-17, BB-101 (a "Pointed 9" variety). The crack that is beginning on the reverse of this specimen at the I of AMERICA will continue to be present on the 1798 B-17, BB-101.
Condition Census: When this piece was cataloged in the April 1997 Eliasberg Sale, the Condition Census was listed as: 63-60-60-55-50-50. One of the MS60 coins was probably the Robison Specimen, called MS60 in Bowers' Silver Dollar book under "Notable Specimens." That piece was offered in a Superior public auction sale in September 1996 as lot 952, where it was graded AU50. Doubtless there are other examples of the 1798 B-6, BB-96 die marriage "out there," but for now this has to be considered as being in the upper portion of the Condition Census for this variety.
Ex: Michael Hering Collection; unknown intermediary or intermediaries; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/97), lot 2182.
