    1799 Draped Bust Dollar, MS63
    Popular 7x6 Stars, B-16, BB-158 Variety
    Attractive Multicolor Toning, Nice Luster

1799 $1 7x6 Stars MS63 PCGS Secure. B-16, BB-158, R.2. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I. Mint records indicate 423,515 Draped Bust dollars were struck in 1799, the largest mintage of the series. However, many of these coins may have been dated 1798, being struck from dies of the previous year that were still serviceable. Similarly, some 1799-dated coins may have been struck in 1800. Experts estimate the actual mintage of 1799-dated coins was probably about 395,000 examples, give-or-take 10%.

A total of 22 die varieties are known for the year, with three varieties displaying a distinctive 1799/8 overdate. The present coin represents the BB-158 variety with the numerals 1 and 7 closely spaced in the date and the U in UNITED missing the upper-left serif. The BB-158 was the only use of the obverse die, but this variety did have a remarriage. The hardy reverse die was first used to strike the early die states of this variety, then combined with another obverse to strike BB-159, then remarried with this obverse to strike the later die states of BB-158, and later used to strike BB-160 and BB-161. While the BB-158 is not difficult to locate in circulated grades, Mint State examples are quite rare.

The present coin is a delightful Select example with well-detailed design elements that show intricate detail on the strands of Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers. Much original mint luster remains, beneath a dark patina of attractive blue, gray, amber, and champagne-gold hues. The well-preserved surfaces show only minor signs of contact and no adjustment marks are evident. Visual appeal is outstanding. Population: 11 in 63 (1 in 63+), 16 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24X7, PCGS# 6878)
