    Terminal State 1799 B-16, BB-158 Dollar, MS64
    Possibly Finest Known

1799 $1 7x6 Stars MS64 NGC. B-16, BB-158, R.2. Bowers-Borckardt Die State IV. The obverse die is shattered and was nearing the end of its die life. The reverse has heavy clash marks, the reason that die was aggressively lapped, removing the berries before it was restored to the press to coin BB-160 and BB-161. Heavy clash marks are clearly visible from the drapery, and the entire date can be seen behind ES and in the space to the right. Other clash marks are visible in the spaces between vertical shield stripes, and at the branch. In addition to light clash marks, we count at least 15 different die cracks on the obverse. It would be pointless to describe them all, when one look at the enlarged illustration with this lot will suffice.
In the Bowers Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, only six Mint State examples and one AU58 were listed in the Notable Specimens section. That section was compiled from an extensive review of many hundred auction catalogs, mostly from the late 1960s to the early 1990s, along with inventories from several prominent early dollar collectors at the time. While not intended to be a "Condition Census," it provides an excellent starting place for further research. The present specimen is different from any of those Notable Specimens and may qualify as the finest known example of the variety.
A sensational Choice Mint State dollar, this piece has highly lustrous, frosty surfaces beneath light gold toning with splashes of iridescence. The strike is well centered and mostly sharp, with slight weakness noticed on the reverse. It is a highly desirable early dollar that is fit for the connoisseur.(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 24X7, PCGS# 6878)
