    Description

    1799 B-23, BB-159 Dollar, AU55
    Eight Stars Left, Five Right

1799 $1 8x5 Stars AU55 NGC. B-23, BB-159, R.4. Bowers-Borckardt Die State II, an intermediate die state with a delicate die crack through the E and B of LIBERTY into the field over the left side of the head. Bolender placed this variety at the end of his 1799 arrangement because of the unusual obverse die. However, die state analysis of all varieties reveals its true placement, thanks to a reverse die used for four different varieties.
The standard star arrangement for silver coins was seven stars to the left and six to the right, while the standard for gold coins was eight left and five right. We can speculate that the engraver of this obverse had just completed a 1799 eagle obverse die before starting this silver dollar obverse. Whatever happened inside the Philadelphia Mint, this is the only silver dollar variety of any date with the particular star arrangement.
A lovely Choice AU example, this remarkable dollar has considerable luster beneath pewter-gray surfaces with hints of lighter silver on the reverse and faint iridescent accents. Census: 4 in 55, 3 finer (3/12).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 24X7, PCGS# 6881)

The way you grouped lots, photographed, and presented the material was too notch. I was impressed that you took the time to attribute coins to the Krause reference as their "plate coin" and that many of your descriptions included pertinent facts and infor
