1799 Irregular Date Dollar, MS62
B-15, BB-152, Late Die State
Condition Census for the Variety

1799 $1 Irregular Date, 13 Stars Reverse, B-15, BB-152, R.3, MS62 PCGS. Bowers Die State V. The BB-152 variety is usually found in circulated grades, seldom exceeding the XF45 grade level. Near-Mint or finer examples are rare. This coin falls within the Condition Census for the variety -- one of five Mint State pieces we are aware of, exceeded only by single MS65, MS64, and MS63 examples.

This pleasing MS62 BB-152 displays an extremely late state of the dies -- known to Bolender as B-15a -- where the obverse die is shattered with several prominent die cracks. A crack through the date curves up through stars 1 to 4, reaching the border at star 5. Another crack begins at the upper right, through the Y and stars 8, 9, and 10, curving through the right field and across the bust and shoulder, eventually joining the first crack at star 1. A crack through RT curves sharply down toward the nose and mouth. Yet another crack joins stars 4 through 7, reaching the border over L, and a crack begins at star 7, continuing to LIBE and the border above the E.

The reverse shows a crack through ES OF, another through the right (facing) wing and field below AMER, and a heavy die flaw joining the stem end to the border. Additional die flaws are seen among the reverse stars. The reverse die has been lapped, showing weak or absent details, including the berries, that are now extremely small. This example is the latest die state seen, and probably could be listed as a new Die State V in the Bowers' scheme. The field stars are arranged in a line pattern -- the only 1799 dollar showing such a pattern -- with a bit of struck-in Mint grease angling through the lower-right stars above UNUM.

Frosty silver mint luster sparkles beneath sparse, deep-gray accents and pale golden-gray toning. Liberty's hair strands are sharply defined except those immediately above the temple. The reverse is a bit weak at a few field stars -- no surprise for this variety in its near-terminal die state. Several arrows lack their tips and three tips are disconnected from their shafts. This is a Draped Bust dollar with great personality sure to grace a fine early dollar collection.
