Description

1799/8 Silver Dollar, MS61
B-3, BB-141, 15 Stars Reverse

1799/8 $1 15 Stars Reverse, B-3, BB-141, R.3, MS61 NGC. Bowers Die State III. The reverse is cracked over ATES and over OF AM. An additional crack curves from the right ribbon through MERIC. Numismatic tradition places the overdates first before the normal date coins. However, the reverse die is found in an earlier die state for 1799 BB-153 proving that the overdate coins were struck after some 1799 normal date varieties.

The Heraldic Eagle reverse dies from 1798 through 1803 were expected to have 13 stars over the eagle, but on this die the engraver incorrectly entered 15 stars. He then enlarged the first and last clouds to cover the extra stars.

This lovely silver dollar presents frosty mint luster with a nicely centered strike, although the impression lacks some of the finer details. Both sides exhibit ivory surfaces with delicate champagne and gold toning. While finer examples of the die marriage exist, this example should garner considerable interest from specialists and Guide Book variety collectors. Census for all 1799/8 varieties: 5 in 61, 15 finer (3/25).
