Description

1800 Dollar, Lustrous AU58
B-16, BB-187, Original Surfaces

1800 $1 B-16, BB-187, R.2, AU58 PCGS. Bowers Die State III, cracked/chipped dies but not yet clashed. The strike is moderately well-executed but a trifle soft on Liberty's temple and on the clouds beneath OF. The border dentils are bold and complete with no discernible planchet adjustment marks. Moderate amounts of luster remain in the protected portions of the fields, giving the surfaces a distinctly original appearance. Both sides are almost completely covered by olive-gold, lavender, and grayish toning. No major abrasions are seen. BB-187 is a plentiful variety, but it is elusive in the upper AU grades. Demand from type collectors keeps the 1800 Draped Bust dollar actively sought-after in high grade, regardless of variety.
