Description
1802/1 Narrow Date Dollar, AU58
B-4, BB-232, Richly Toned
Bowers' Encyclopedia Plate Coin
1802/1 $1 Close Date, B-4, BB-232, R.3, AU58 PCGS. Ex:
Miller. Bowers Die State II. Bowers Die State II. Spectacularly
toned in calico shades including orange, cobalt-blue, violet,
jade-green, yellow, and tan-gold, this near-Mint 1802/1 early
dollar shows only a bit of high-point wear coupled with a slightly
soft central strike. Abrasions or marks of any kind are essentially
absent, while the Narrow Date clearly displays a bold underdigit 1
beneath 2. The first 1 in the date touches the adjacent curl. An
L-shaped die crack connects with star 13 and extends left above the
drapery, turning south midway across Liberty's chest to the drapery
folds above 2. The BB-232 variety is moderately available in lesser
grades, but it becomes scarce at this level and in any Mint State
grade. The present example serves as the BB-232 plate coin in Q.
