Description

1802/1 Wide Date Bust Dollar, MS62
B-3, BB-234, Wide Date
Ex: Robison; Condition Census Coin

1802/1 $1 Wide Date, B-3, BB-234, R.3, MS62 NGC. Bowers Die State III, the usual state with an oblong die lump in the right obverse field. Easily a Condition Census specimen and possibly the finest known, this BB-234 coin is the first example listed in the Notable Specimens roster of the Bowers-Borckardt reference. More recently, an MS63 PCGS example appeared in the Cardinal Collection sale, and a similarly graded MS62 NGC example of this variety appeared in the January 2006 American Numismatic Rarities sale. An MS61 PCGS specimen is part of the famous Hesselgesser Collection on the PCGS Set Registry.

This impressive overdate dollar displays satin luster beneath original, delicate gold and champagne toning, gradually changing to steel-blue along both the left obverse and reverse. The strike is sharp -- especially on the reverse -- with only a few trivial marks.
