Attractive and Scarce 1803 B-1 Silver Dollar1803 $1 Small 3 AU50 NGC. B-1, BB-251, R.4. Die State III. Reiver Die State a. Star 8 points to arm of Y below serif; projection from lower right curve of D. This is a scarce 1803 variety, and the present example is almost certainly a Condition Census example. Probably only about 100 to 150 examples of this variety are known, mostly in grades below XF. This example is from the latest die state Bowers recorded, with a light crack through R and another left of the 8. The reverse is lapped with cloud 6 nearly gone. A lovely dollar with light gray color on both sides, accented by peripheral gold toning. The surfaces are smooth with only the usual minor imperfections. Both sides retain much luster.
Ex: Harlan Berk (10/2001).
