Description

1798 Heraldic Eagle Dollar, XF40
B-9, BB-121, Oddly Placed Field Stars
'Amateur Diecutter's Reverse'

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, 4 Lines, B-9, BB-121, R.4, XF40 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. Several die cracks include a prominent one through 1and 7 in the date. Sometimes mistaken for the 10 Arrows variety, this BB-121 actually has either 12 or 13 arrows, two of which are sticks and a third that is barely visible among the surrounding arrow shafts. This XF40 example is richly toned in medium-gray shades with some old, deep-gray build-up around several stars and the well-struck motifs. The few tiny ticks and abrasions are microscopic in nature. There are no adjustment marks or heavy contacts to distract the eye.
