Description
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, MS62
Final-Year Type Issue
Popular B-5, BB-27 Variety
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, B-5, BB-27, R.1, MS62
PCGS. Bowers Die State II, with a die line from the left stem
toward the rim. The obverse design of the silver dollar was
switched from the older Flowing Hair design to the new Draped Bust
motif late in the year in 1795. Mint records indicate a substantial
mintage of 160,295 pieces of the Flowing Hair design were struck
before the changeover, with 19 die varieties known for the date and
type. This coin represents the B-5, BB-27 variety, with a diagonal
bar in the obverse field, near the uppermost curl, and three leaves
under each wing on the reverse. The B-5, BB-27 is the most
available variety of the date and the 1795 is the only practical
option for type collectors seeking an example of the Flowing Hair
design, because the 1794 is so rare and expensive. This was the
only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was also used to
produce the BB-25 and BB-26 varieties of this date.Q. David Bowers notes Miss Liberty's portrait was engraved in unusually high relief on this issue. This remarkable MS62 specimen exhibits sharply detailed design elements in most areas, with full star centers and just a trace of softness on the eagle's breast, opposite the high relief of the bust on the obverse. Attractive shades of lavender-gray, sea-green, and cerulean-blue toning blanket the lightly marked surfaces, with a few highlights of russet in selected areas. Original mint luster shines through the patina, adding to the outstanding eye appeal. Population (for the variety): 1 in 62, 2 finer (8/20). Population (all varieties): 6 in 62, 11 finer (8/20).
