    Significant Near-Mint 1795 Eagle, Breen 1-A

1795 $10 13 Leaves AU58 PCGS. B. 1-A, Taraszka-1, R.3. The most frequently seen variety of the year, which is distinguished by a minute extension at the upper left serif of the Y in LIBERTY. The 1795 Capped Bust Right, Small Eagle ten was produced with five known die marriages between September 27, 1795 and March 30, 1796. It seems highly likely that representatives of the B. 1-A variety were the first delivered, because they were preserved in greater numbers than examples of the other four die marriages. The novelty of these large, impressive gold coins and their resultant popularity among the public at the time also explain why most survivors grade XF-AU; i.e., many examples were retrieved after a short stint in circulation and preserved for posterity. The present example is bright yellow-gold, with ample remaining definition over the main design elements. The obverse displays prominent crisscross adjustment marks that are of mint origin, as are a number of tiny planchet flaws in the obverse field. A hair-thin lamination, also as made, journeys in a vertical direction from 7 o'clock on the reverse to the left wing. A significant early large denomination type coin, from the first year of gold production at the fledgling United States Mint. Certified in a green label PCGS holder.(Registry values: P5)
