1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-1, High R.3, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b, with a die crack through the bottom of 17 in the date. The largest denomination authorized by the Mint Act, the eagle was not only the flagship gold coin of the United States, but also a confirmation of the young nation's commitment to the decimal system, according to Walter Breen in his Encyclopedia. According to Mint records, the Philadelphia Mint struck a small production of 5,583 Capped Bust Right eagles in 1795, but some more 1795-dated coins may have been struck in 1796, as the Mint continued using the expensive coinage dies as long as they were serviceable, regardless of calendar year. Five die varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the popular BD-1 variety, with the 5 in the date overlapping the bust, star 11 near Y in LIBERTY, and the leaf nearly touching the U in UNITED on the reverse. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used again to strike the BD-2 variety of this date. The BD-1 is a relatively available variety and John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 225 to 325 examples in all grades.

This is a pleasing example of the most common die marriage of the 1795 eagle. Widely saved by early collectors, the 1795 is an immensely popular coin among type collectors, especially those who prefer first-year issues. This coin obviously circulated for a very limited amount of time, and the amount of wear is neither excessive nor distracting. Rather, the surfaces have acquired a pleasing blanket of original olive-gold patina with iridescent lemon-gold shadings around many of the devices. Only a trace of friction is evident on the strongly impressed design elements and some traces of original mint luster remain in the protected areas. A shallow planchet indention in the right obverse field is noted as a pedigree marker. For all 13 Leaves varieties, Population: 32 in 58 (1 in 58+), 52 finer (10/25).
