    Description

    1795 Eagle, BD-1, Unc Details
    13 Leaves, Sharp Definition

1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-1, High R.3 -- Reverse Repaired -- NGC Details. Unc. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/?. The obverse is in the latest die state, but the reverse does not show the die cracks associated with die state b in John Dannreuther's Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties reference. A light crack is seen along the top of the RIC in AMERICA, which is not described in the Dannreuther reference. Several BD-1 coins have been seen with earlier reverse die states than they theoretically should have considering the late state of the obverse. One explanation is that the obverse reached its latest state before the reverse began to crack. Another is that the coin offered here is actually in a later reverse die state than Dannreuther describes, and is lightly lapped to remove the die cracks described in state b but has developed a new crack atop the RIC.

The BD-1 variety as a whole is fairly plentiful and ideal for type purposes. As many as 325 pieces are known. This example is unworn and lustrous, showing straw-gold surfaces and sharp design elements. The border dentils are complete, and no adjustment marks are visible. A small patch of tool marks in the reverse field above the eagle's left (facing) wing prevents a numeric grade but is hardly distracting. To the unaided eye, there is not much visual difference between this piece and a problem-free Uncirculated 1795 eagle.
