Description
1795 13 Leaves Ten Dollar, VF35
BD-1, First Die Variety of Denomination
1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-1, High R.3, VF35 PCGS.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. BD-1 is the first ten dollar die
variety coined by the U.S. Mint. It is readily attributed by the
defective left serif of the Y in LIBERTY. The pick-up point on the
reverse is the U in UNITED, which is touched by a frond from the
palm branch. The Small Eagle type is significantly scarcer than its
Heraldic Eagle successor, and is absent from most advanced gold
collections. The present coin shows substantial wing plumage along
with traces of peach-gold luster. The high points and open fields
are apricot-gold. Despite its service in early American commerce,
marks are unimportant except for a reverse rim nick at 3 o'clock
and a narrow impression on the eagle's neck and near the top of the
right (facing) wing.Ex: Orlando FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 8724. (NGC ID# 25ZU, Variety PCGS# 45710, Base PCGS# 8551)
