Description
1795 Ten Dollar Gold, Fine 15
Rare 13 Leaves BD-4, Small Eagle
1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-4, R.5, Fine 15 PCGS.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. An interesting lump from an
internal die break is seen on the reverse between OF and AMERICA.
The BD-4 die combination has a distinctive date where the 5 is
close to, but does not touch the bust, while the reverse has a palm
branch tip that touches the right inside serif of the last A of
AMERICA. Only an estimated 60 to 80 examples remain of the rare
BD-4 variety. The first United States ten dollar gold coins had the misfortune of being largely exported and melted, prompting the suspension of the denomination in 1805. Few well-circulated survivors remain, as most extant examples are in higher circulated or Mint State grades. This lovely specimen is a rare exception, having survived a full tour of duty in commerce to fortunately land in the hands of collectors. Antique gold surfaces with olive overtones and orange highlights give attractive eye appeal. The coin is lightly abraded as expected for the degree of circulation wear, with a thin scratch seen above the right wing, but the overall presentation is pleasing. A nicely centered strike with considerable detail remaining in hair curls and eagle feathers. This is an excellent well-circulated representative of the iconic Draped Bust, Small Eagle ten dollar design type.
