Description

1795 BD-5 Eagle, AU55
13 Leaves Reverse

1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-5, R.5, AU55 PCGS. Five die marriages of 1795 eagles are combinations of three obverse dies and three reverse dies. The five varieties include the famous Nine Leaves reverse and four die pairs with the 13 Leaves reverse. When Walter Breen studied the early eagles in the 1960s, he decided that a fourth obverse die existed, and that incorrect observation created confusion for many years until John Dannreuther compiled the Harry W. Bass, Jr. notes into a detailed study of the early gold varieties. The considerable efforts of Bass and Dannreuther have correctly identified the varieties of all three early gold denominations, and today, collectors have an excellent reference to work towards a complete early gold variety collection.

Attribution of the five 1795 eagle varieties is not difficult. BD-3 had the Nine Leaves reverse and that is definitive. The other four varieties have the 13 Leaves reverse, with two leaves overlapped below the N in UNITED. Reverse A (BD-1 and BD-2) has a leaf jointed to the lower left curve of the U. BD-1 has a star touching the top right serif of the Y in LIBERTY, while BD-2 has the same star distant from the Y. Reverse C (BD-4 and BD-5) has the leaf away from the U, and has a prominent die defect left of the first A in AMERICA. The upper left star joins the cap on BD-4 and is separated from the cap on BD-5.

This lovely Choice AU example has rich green-gold surfaces with nearly full luster. An identifying mark is noted on Liberty's cheek with short horizontal adjustment marks or scratches through Liberty's hair. The reverse shows slight edge impairments, although overall, this example has excellent eye appeal.
