1795 Capped Bust, Small Eagle Ten, AU Details
First Date of Denomination, BD-5
1795 $10 13 Leaves--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details.
Breen-6830, Taraszka-5, BD-5, R.5. The Philadelphia Mint first
struck ten dollar gold pieces in September of 1795. Five varieties
are known for the date, including the BD-5 variety represented by
the present coin. BD-5 is recognized by the position of the bust
overlapping the 5 in the date, the 13 leaves on the palm branch,
and the leaf distant from U in UNITED. The issue is the second
rarest variety of the date, with an estimated surviving population
of 35-45 pieces. The original mintage was probably in the 500 to
1,000 piece range. The coin offered here is well, but not fully struck. Some slight softness is evident on the eagle's breast. Adjustment marks are present in the center of the obverse, most notably in the hair behind Liberty's ear, and there are also a few very shallow perpendicular marks on the cheek. The surfaces are lightly hairlined, with a few small abrasions on each side, none of particular note.(Registry values: P5)
