    Description

    1795 Eagle, BD-1, XF Details
    First Year of Denomination

1795 $10 13 Leaves -- Scratch -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. BD-1, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The Philadelphia Mint produced gold coins for the first time in 1795, with a modest mintage of 5,583 ten dollar gold coins and a slightly larger mintage of half eagles. Five different die varieties of the ten dollar eagles are known, with this coin representing the BD-1 variety that shows star 11 near Y in LIBERTY and a leaf nearly touching U in UNITED on the reverse. Most of the reported mintage was probably of this variety, as the surviving population numbers 225-325 examples in all grades. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was also used to strike the BD-2 variety of this date.

The present coin displays well-detailed devices that retain much of their original design detail. The bright green and orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded in most areas, but a couple of fairly deep scratches can be seen in an unobtrusive location below the branch on the reverse. Traces of original mint luster add to the considerable aesthetic appeal.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25ZU, PCGS# 8551)
