Description

1796 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU58
BD-1, The Only Dies for the Date
Reflective Prooflike Fields

1796 $10 BD-1, R.4, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. A vertical die crack extends down from E in LIBERTY, partially effaced by die polishing. The die crack descends downward through Liberty's hair and neck, ending at the drapery edge. A reported 4,156-piece mintage may or may not be fully accurate -- different researchers have varying estimates and there is evidence that some 1796 eagles were struck in 1797 from a remarriage of the 1796 dies. Regardless of the exact mintage, Dannreuther estimates 90 to 110 pieces are known today in all grades combined. Perhaps 12 to 18 or so of those are fully Mint State. In any case, the 1796 issue is thought to employ the single BD-1 die pair and as time passes the likelihood of identifying another variety diminishes. In any case, the 1796 ten dollar is significantly scarcer than its 1795 predecessor and accordingly is in strong demand by early gold and date collectors. The ten dollar gold coins were the new nation's largest denomination widely popular in commerce. In upcoming years the coins were used in foreign trade and were exported.

This splendid example is nearly Mint State with a picture-perfect strike and a mere touch of rub at the eagle's breast. The mirrorlike fields show faint abrasions and scattered tiny ticks, but the overall visual impression is excellent. Attractive lemon-gold color features green-gold overtones for strong eye appeal. There are no adjustment marks to distract the eye. Given the quality surfaces and near-Mint surface quality, advanced type collectors and gold specialists alike would be wise to take full advantage of the bidding opportunity represented by this radiant and well-preserved 1796 ten dollar gold.
