    Description

    1797 BD-2 Eagle, AU58
    First Heraldic Eagle Variety

1797 $10 Large Eagle AU58 NGC. BD-2, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The obverse has the usual double die crack through the final 7, from the border to the bust. The reverse has a die crack between the S and O, from the border to cloud 7. There is no mention of that crack in the Bass-Dannreuther reference, even though it is visible on the plate coin in that book.

John Dannreuther indicates that this is the first Heraldic Eagle variety struck in 1797, and we agree with that observation. As the first variety of a new design, this is a popular choice with type collectors. About 100 examples are known in all grades. A trace of wear appears on the high points, with light yellow-gold luster and hints of pale orange patina. An attractive piece showing only scattered, trivial marks.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25ZY, PCGS# 8559)

    Weight: 17.50 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
