Description

1797 Ten Dollar, AU55 Large Eagle
Scarce BD-2 Variety

1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-2, High R.4, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b, with two cracks through the second 7 in the date. Pleasing honey-orange gold with good luster in protected areas. The coin displays a solid strike with central devices showing excellent detail, with only a few small marks for the grade. Outstanding eye appeal.

Interesting long thin neck on the eagle, which John Dannreuther identified as the first in the emission order of the Large Eagle reverse, proven with Harry Bass die data. Recent research has shown the appearance of the Heraldic Eagle reverse coincides with the undeclared Quasi-War between the United States and France. The Heraldic Eagle was also engraved by Chief Engraver Robert Scot on an example of the First Federal Issue of revenue stamps, used to help finance United States Navy ships for the conflict.
