1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-3, R.5, AU55 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther
Die State d/c. This well-balanced example is tinged in yellow-gold
color. The surfaces are mostly lustrous with much mint frost
adhering. There are some adjustment marks (as produced) over,
before, and behind Liberty's portrait on the obverse, but the
strike on both sides is well centered and uncommonly sharp for a
product of the early Philadelphia Mint. A few light abrasions are
noted for accuracy, none of which are individually distracting. The
1797 Large Eagle is a first-year issue that is encountered less
often than either the 1799 or 1801. The BD-3 variety is scarcer
than BD-2 and BD-4, the other 1797 Large Eagle marriages. Any early
eagle is a prized acquisition, especially a 1797 example in Choice
