Description

1797 Ten Dollar Large Eagle, AU58
BD-4, Excellent Near-Mint Specimen

1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-4, High R.4, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/a. The year 1797 marks the first appearance of the Heraldic Eagle Reverse for the ten dollar denomination, skillfully engraved by Robert Scot. For the 1797 BD-4, a "Long Thick Neck" was engraved on the reverse eagle, which tapers from the motto to the head of the eagle. A single obverse working die was used for the three 1797 Heraldic Eagle ten dollar die marriages, with ten stars on left, six stars on right.

This is an excellent near-Mint specimen of Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle ten dollar design, with only very light wear on the high points of the coin. There are Mint-made adjustment marks on the obverse, which are common on eighteenth-century United States gold and silver coins. The early Mint had a team of men and women adjusters who ensured the planchets were at legal weight. Slightly reflective fields are observed on both sides, indicating a rare early stage of BD-4 where the obverse die was lapped and the reverse die was polished for use. The reverse has die polishing marks, including off the upper right corner of the shield that matches the Bass-Dannreuther BD-4 plate coin. Mint frost is present on the portrait and eagle feathers, which contrasts nicely with the reflective fields. A few small contact marks are seen under T in LIBERTY. Attractive orange-gold coloration covers the surfaces. Sharply struck with all devices displaying full definition.
