Description

1797 Ten Dollar Large Eagle, AU58
Exceptional BD-4 Variety

1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-4, High R.4, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b. The reverse has light die cracks at the left of R and through C in AMERICA which confirms this die state. For the year 1797, the ten dollar denomination had both the Small Eagle and Large Eagle types, with only one die variety, BD-1, having the Small Eagle reverse. The BD-4 is the last in the emission order of 1797 die marriages, and features the Long Thick Neck. Robert Scot engraved three different neck shapes on the 1797 Heraldic Eagle reverse dies, before settling on a single neck shape in 1799 that would be used until the end of the series in 1804.

This is an exceptional example of the 1797 Draped Bust, Large Eagle ten dollar gold piece. Lovely tangerine-gold coloration blankets the surfaces, which have only trivial marks from a very brief time in circulation. Satiny luster is found in the fields, with the devices being frosty in texture. Some die polishing lines can be observed on the upper reverse fields. The strike is full, with all design elements well-defined including Miss Liberty and the eagle. Overall, a wonderful representative of the 1797 Heraldic Eagle ten dollar issue.
